Charlie Brown’s Pancake & Steak House is a Speedway institution. This is where my love of pancakes started. While the location has changed from when I used to go as a teenager, the atmosphere and pancakes remain the same.
I have been going here since I was in high school. On Friday mornings of our high school basketball games, we would go to Charlie Brown’s as a team. Consider this the “carbo loading” before the big game. Also, I would go to Charlie Brown’s on some Sunday mornings after finishing my paper route. It was either Long’s Donuts or Charlie Brown’s.
I had the chance to go back there, this morning, and share this memory with my oldest daughter. It was something special. She’s still smiling over the strawberry pancakes. Because this is the morning of qualifications for the Indianapolis 500, several race teams were getting their pancakes on before a long stressful day. The month of May will bring all the legends in racing to Charlie Brown’s for a great homestyle breakfast and a little taste of nostalgia.
If you are ever in Speedway, IN, make sure you get over to Charlie Brown’s on Main Street. Get the short stack and a side of country fries and a coffee. You won’t be disappointed!
